Hazel's Stones
Weswal Gallery, 2021
Hazel's Stones is a body of work referencing stones collected from Gomeroi Country by a dear lady named Hazel. During the 1960's, 70's and 80's, Hazel took long bush walks and would collect stones she found in the rivers to later cut and polish. I was given some of these stones by textile artist, Sybil Orr, Hazel's daughter.
In response, I created a series of fibre artworks , studying each stone closely, finding colours, components and compositions that are otherwise blind to the eye at a single glance. Looking at the stones with a magnifier we can see the beauty Hazel unveiled, the harmony and fractious nature of each stone being in itself a work of art.
